The Best Stuff to Buy In Bulk

  • Save Your Money, Save Your Sanity

Listen, here’s the thing: it may feel a bit awkward to load up the SUV with six months of Huggies diapers or a 35 pack of spring water. But it will save you money. It will save you time and fuel—less trips to the store. And it may even save whatever is left of your fragile sanity. A customer in Ohio reportedly “grew so angry at the price of some crab cakes that he punched the store manager ‘five or six times,’ head butted him, and spit in his face.” We don’t want any of our readers to be that dude. Had he bought his crab cakes in bulk, he probably would have paid less, and might have been less insanely violent. On a related note, if you've just read our story "Best Stuff NOT to Buy in Bulk" you'll recognize some of the same items items here. How's that possible, you ask? This list is based soled on the best deals in terms of up front savings, whereas the NOT to Buy in Bulk article looks at a few different factors, including space considerations and shelf life. As a result there's some overlap. While nuts, for example, may be a best buy in terms of up front savings, it is also on the not to buy list because nuts spoil and if you buy more than you can use you'll lose in the long run. On to the list of the best bulk deals. Photo Credit: KitAy
A Quick Word About PR: Sam’s Club Vs. Costco
  • A Quick Word About PR: Sam’s Club Vs. Costco

We called the PR team at Sam’s Club and asked to hear about some of their most popular items bought in bulk. They asked for our deadline and said someone would get back to us. They never did. Compare that clear-cut PR failure with our Costco experience: within a matter of minutes after leaving a message, we were on the phone with the CFO of the entire company, Richard Galanti, who has been a top Costco executive since 1985. We have since emailed back and forth with Mr. Galanti. Normally when you email an executive, you can expect layers of PR people and personal assistants to get in the way (to justify their existence, I suppose), but Costco’s culture seems very direct. His team got us a list of the most popular, most cost-efficient bulk buys at Costco. Some of the items surprised us—others made sense… Photo Credit: timbrauhn
