The Most Investigated Airlines

  • It's all relative

Airlines based in the U.S. are actually not that dangerous. Especially when compared with airlines abroad, the fact that no major carrier from this country has experienced a fatal crash since an American Airlines plane crashed in Queens in 2001 (killing 265 passengers and crew) is a testament to the effective responses of airlines here to safety incidents. Despite the fact that air travel is safer now than ever before in recent memory, incidents and accidents do occur, and in many cases they affect if not the safety of passengers then at least their comfort. In putting together our comparison, we looked at incident and accident reports investigated by the National Transportation Security Board since January 2007 for the major airlines based in the U.S. The NTSB defines accidents as "an occurrence associated with the operation of an aircraft which takes place between the time any person boards the aircraft with the intention of flight and all such persons have disembarked, and in which any person suffers death or serious injury, or in which the aircraft receives substantial damage." An incident is defined as "an occurrence other than an accident, associated with the operation of an aircraft, which affects or could affect the safety of operations." An incident, for instance, could include a bird strike. It is important to remember that inclusion on this list in no means implies unsafe practices on the part of any airline. Incidents and accidents are referenced regardless of the fault that may or may not eventually be assigned by the NTSB investigation, which can take years to complete. This list reflects the airlines that faced the most investigations from the NTSB during the past three years, but does not factor in the rate of investigations per number of flights.
