Live Like a Pop Diva

  • Live like a Diva

The term “diva” is derived from the Italian word for “goddess” and was originally used to refer to divinely talented and fanatically celebrated female opera stars. The term is now more widely used to describe gifted women performers in all forms of music as well as theater and cinema. “Diva” has also acquired some negative connotations, being used to suggest a star is difficult or has an inflated opinion of herself – but that really misses the celebratory spirit of the term. What might be fairly said about a diva is that she has high expectations – for herself and of the people and things she surrounds herself with, and a taste for the finer things in life. So when a diva moves house, the properties they leave behind will fit even the most discriminating tastes. Here are some famous divas’ former homes, ready to give anyone with the cash a taste of the lifestyles of the rich and famous. Photo Credit: Getty Images

The mansion is in the swanky neighborhood of West Hollywood in an area known as the “Bird Streets” because, you guessed it, most of the streets are named after birds. The location is an enclave for the rich and famous with easy access to all things Los Angeles as well as great views of the city, canyon, and ocean. Another Grammy Award winner, newlywed and new mom – Alicia Keys – is unloading her Long Island home for the fire-sale price of $2,299,500 (she bought it in 2005 for $3,995,000). While the 2.2-acre, seven-bedroom mansion will serve anyone with an Empire State of Mind, it's also big enough for a family. Photo Credit: Alexis L Siegel/Core Long Island LLC

Keys is selling the traditional home on a tree-lined cul-de-sac, having already bought Lenny Kravitz’s old blinged-out Manhattan penthouse for $14.5 million with her husband, producer Swizz Beatz. The songwriter and actress, who was born and raised in Texas, is also a two-time Grammy winner and multiplatinum-selling artist. While her awards are enough to earn her diva status, she was also granted the title when she headlined VH1’s “Divas” in September 2009. There is also a rec room above the three-car garage, a den and a living room for relaxing in front of the fire. Clarkson reportedly did not live here full-time, as her primary residence is a 50-acre property in Fort Worth, Texas, but she needed a place to stay while collaborating with country singer Reba McEntire on a project. Judy Garland earned her diva title with multiple Academy, Golden Globe and Grammy awards, though she might be best known for the role she played at 16 as Dorothy in The Wizard of Oz. Garland and her second husband (out of five), Vincent Minelli – that's Liza's dad – built the home together. It was later owned by Garland’s fellow Rat Pack-er, Sammy Davis Jr. The property recently underwent a full restoration and renovation, with a home theater and custom chef’s kitchen being just two of the updates.
