Who's Hiring Part Time: Lowe’s, JCPenney & Jamba Juice

Looking for part-time work? You are in luck. There are more part-time opportunities than ever. Part-time employees generally don’t receive the full benefit package available to full-time staff, and may receive a lower hourly rate, so these workers could be cheaper for employers’ bottom line. As a result, many companies are cutting back on full-time staff and boosting their part-time workforce.

Part-time jobs can be a good choice for students, retirees, moms with young kids or people who recently lost their full-time job or had their hours cut (you can usually earn a certain amount per week without a reduction in unemployment compensation benefits, although this varies by state).

To attract the best candidates, many companies now offer at least some benefits for part-time employees. These can range from health insurance and paid time off to employee discounts or free merchandise.

Here are some companies with a lot of part-time openings available right now:

Lowe’s (Stock Quote: LOW)

Position: Lowe’s currently has approximately 7,900 positions open companywide. Positions range from seasonal employee in Lowe's stores, to team members in a regional distribution center, to miscellaneous positions in the corporate office.

Desired Hours Per Week: Flexible and varies by position and location. Some weekends and nights are usually required.

Pay: Starts at around $10/hour for store cashiers. Positions requiring special expertise pay a higher hourly rate.

Benefits: Permanent part-time workers are offered health insurance, vacation and holiday pay, retirement benefits and a 10% discount at Lowe’s stores.

Location(s): The company has 1,650 stores nationwide. The corporate office is located in North Carolina.

Requirements: High School or GED for store positions. Previous experience and expertise in sales or customer service is helpful, as is knowledge about building or home improvement products. You must pass a criminal background check and pre-employment drug test. Some positions require specialized knowledge/experience in a specific area (plumbing, electrical, etc.).

The Inside Scoop: If you’re a do-it-yourself type (or wish you were), this could be the perfect job for you. Customers often seek advice or guidance for their home improvement projects, so you need to learn as much as possible about your department’s products and their uses. For some positions, heavy lifting might be required.

JCPenney (Stock Quote: JCP)

Position: Hourly sales positions at retail stores.

Desired hours per week: Varies. Generally, some weekends and/or nights are required. Stores have expanded hours during holiday season.

Pay: Starts at around $8.50/hour. Some positions involve a combination of base hourly rate plus commission.

Benefits: Part-time Associates (defined as employees who work less than 35 hours per week), are invited to participate in the Additional Benefits Choices program, which offers medical, dental, vision, critical illness and life insurance. All Associates receive a discount at JCPenney stores, Catalog and online at jcp.com.

Location(s): More than 1,000 stores nationwide, with the heaviest concentration in the south and northeast.

Requirements: High school diploma or GED. Previous sales or cash register experience is preferred.

The Inside Scoop: Starting out as a part-timer doesn’t work against you later. Many part-timers are later offered full-time supervisory positions. A company rep would not provide specifics about part-time opportunities, but pointed us to the careers section of the JCPenney web site, which raves that “JCPenney is one of the few retailers to offer benefits to its part-time Associates.”

Jamba Juice (Stock Quote: JMBA)

Position: Team members (a combination of a cashier, customer service rep and juice blender)

Desired Hours Per Week: Varies by location. Nights and weekends are required.

Pay: Varies with experience.

Location(s): More than 700 locations nationwide, generally located in large cities or malls

Requirements: Must be at least 16 years old with a valid work permit. Restaurant or retail work experience is a plus.

The Inside Scoop: “Jamba Juice is looking for engaging candidates (customer oriented) who want to be part of a fun-filled team,” says company rep Marci Coulson. “We are looking for team members who are willing to go the extra mile to serve our customers.” In other words, they want enthusiasm, and lots of it. It’s nearly impossible to be too energetic for this place. They love people who seem really, really peppy. Also, the environment is casual and relaxed – company reps actually advise against arriving at the job interview too overdressed and suggest job-seekers aim for a “business casual” look.
