NEW YORK (MainStreet) – Times Square may be the first place you think of when you hear “New Year’s Eve,” but more travelers plan to ring in 2011 in Las Vegas, according to Travelocity.
The gambling mecca ranked first on the list of top 10 New Year’s destinations, which was based on the number of vacation packages booked on the travel search engine for New Year’s Eve weekend. The Big Apple ranked second for the second year in a row. Cancun, the only international destination to make the cut, placed third.
According to Genevieve Shaw Brown, senior editor of Travelocity, the rankings have more to do with cost than entertainment value.
“Price is always a huge influence on leisure travel,” Shaw said. “The New Year’s holiday is a peak time, so prices are generally higher than other times of year.”
Vegas, Shaw says, has been a great bargain for the past few years, as its hotels have some of the most competitive rates in the country. A quick comparison of rates indicated that East Coast travelers can get a vacation package during the holiday weekend to Vegas for as little as $538 per person. In contrast, those on the West Coast must pay at least $787 to visit the Big Apple.
