Toyota has repaired 65% of the more than 8 million models it has recalled in the past year, the company announced Monday.

Toyota (Stock Quote: TM) and Lexus dealers have performed more than 5 million repairs for the three key recalls the company announced in late 2009 and early 2010 involving sticking accelerator pedals, faulty floor mats and inadequately updated anti-lock brake systems.

According to the car company, approximately 8% of the 2.3 million vehicles recalled for pedal modifications have been repaired. More than 86% of the anti-lock brake system program updates have been performed on the 148,000 recalled Prius and Lexus models, and nearly 58% of the floor mat entrapment modifications have been completed on the 5.4 million recalled vehicles.

As previously reported so far this year, Toyota has had 15 major recalls affecting more than 6 million vehicles. Faulty Toyota vehicles have allegedly led to more than 100 deaths as well as some massive lawsuits involving two deaths caused by Land Cruisers. Additionally, in late September 2009, 3.8 million cars, trucks and SUVs in the U.S. were recalled when concerns arose that driver’s side floor mats could cause accelerator pedals to stick and possibly cause a car crash.

Toyota did not specify when the rest of the vehicle repairs would be completed.

“Toyota has made significant progress in recent months to help ensure that our customers can have complete confidence in the quality, safety and reliability of their vehicles, and our latest initiatives build on those accomplishments,” Steve St. Angelo, Chief Quality Officer for Toyota North America said in a press release.

These efforts to minimize future recalls include equipping all of its new vehicles with advanced safety features, instituting new training protocols to further strengthen the quality, safety and reliability of its vehicles and enhancing supplier collaboration and quality controls.
