Steve Jobs captivated the tech world last month when he debuted Apple’s (Stock Quote: AAPL) iPad, their long awaited gadgety tablet computer thing. The device is scheduled to ship by the end of the month (though some have doubts the company will meet that date) but now there is some competition.
Dell (Stock Quote: DELL) recently teased their own version of the tablet computer, called the Mini 5, which will likely debut in two months.
Dell has the advantage of being second, meaning it can respond to the missing elements in the iPad. One of the biggest complaints about Apple’s device was that it didn’t have a camera. So naturally, Dell would not make this mistake. According to CNN, “The Mini 5 will sport a 5-megapixel camera on the back, a separate front-facing camera that can be used for video conferencing, a standard 3.5-mm headphone jack, Wi-Fi and 3G connectivity and a Qualcomm Snapdragon 1-GHz processor.”
The first generation Mini 5 will have a 5 inch screen, but CNN reports that Dell already has plans to release models in other sizes. As for the price, Dell officials simply said that it will be “competitive.” The question is, will this news cause Apple to delay shipping of the iPad a little longer to respond to Dell?Regardless of what Apple does, Dell already has one guaranteed edge – any name is better than iPad.
