Some childhood fears appear to have come true. Certain side-support railings and slats on bunk beds could break, causing the beds to collapse.
Discount retailer Big Lots has received 14 reports of support slats on bunk beds cracking or breaking, according to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, including four cases causing minor injuries. As a result, 20,000 sets of wooden bunk beds are being recalled. The recalled beds were sold exclusively at Big Lots (Stock Quote: BIG) stores nationwide from between May 2008 and February 2009 for about $300.
The bunk beds affected by this recall include a three-step ladder and have the model numbers WP-9108-1 or WP-9108-2. The model number can be found on a sticker on the bunk bed’s interior panel of the headboard or the footboard, the CPSC says.
Consumers are urged to immediately stop using the recalled bunk beds and contact Big Lots to return defective parts and get a free repair kit, the CPSC reports.
Big Lots can be reached at (866) 244-5687 or online at www.biglots.com for more information.
