Recall Watch: Kids Play Yards

A million play yards including those with bassinets are being recalled after a fall hazard led 21 injuries to young children, including one concussion.

The play yards, which can also function as portable cribs, are manufactured by Kolcraft Enterprises and were sold under the Kolcraft, Carter’s, Sesame Street, Jeep, Contours, Care Bear and Eric Carle Play Yards names at Babies R Us, Wal-Mart (Stock Quote: WMT), Kmart, Sears (Stock Quote: SHLD), Target Stock Quote: TGT) and other stores nationwide and online from January 2000 to January 2009 for between $50 and $160, according to the Consumer Products Safety Commission.

The recall follows 347 reports of sides of the play yard collapsing unexpectedly, leading to injuries including bumps, scrapes, bruises and one concussion, the CPSC says. The recall covers several models of play yards with wheels, including some that have pockets and a bassinet or changing table attached.

Consumers should stop using the play yards immediately and contact Kolcraft for a free repair kit by calling (866) 594-4208 anytime or go to for more information.

Some of the play yards in this recall were previously recalled in September 2007 after a changing table strangulation hazard led to the death of a ten-month-old child.
