Following a March recall of 1.6 million Maytag refrigerators, 46,000 more are being recalled after additional reports of the appliances overheating, leading to smoke damage and extensive kitchen damage.
The recalled refrigerators include Maytag, Magic Chef, Performa by Maytag and Crosley brand side-by-side and top freezer refrigerators with specific serial and model numbers.
An electrical failure in a component that turns on the refrigerator’s compressor can cause overheating and poses a serious fire hazard, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Refrigerators with freezers on the bottom are not included in the recall.
The affected refrigerators came in black, bisque, white and stainless steel and were sold at department and appliance stores and by homebuilders nationwide from September 2000 through May 2004 for about $350 to $1,600.
Consumers can contact Maytag immediately to determine whether their refrigerator is included in the recall and to schedule a free in-home repair if necessary. Consumers are advised not to return the refrigerator to the retailer where it was purchased.
