More women under the age of 30 are now driving a luxury vehicle, according to the online car leasing marketplace LeaseTrader.com.

Approximately 51.2% of the website’s current luxury car leasers under 30 are women. According to John Sternal, Vice President of Marketing Communications for LeaseTrader.com, this is the first time women have made up a higher percentage of this particular under 30 demographic since the company started aggregating its data in 2005. That year, 57.4% of those with a luxury lease under 30 were male while only 42.6% were female.

“The shift in driving power has been progressing over the last few years on the LeaseTrader.com marketplace as more women take a greater interest in what they drive,” Sergio Stiberman, CEO and founder of LeaseTrader.com, said. “Young women commanding higher salaries are becoming a larger customer base in shopping and trading for luxury leases.”

LeaseTrader.com is an online marketplace that matches car shoppers with individuals looking to escape their auto lease. The stats were compiled by analyzing all of the leases in its online database as of August. The current database contains more than 20,000 leases on vehicles nationwide and luxury vehicles were defined as those valued at $40,000 or above. These vehicles, which can be searched for in a separate category of the website, include cars like the Audi TT, Audi A4, Infiniti G37, Lexis SC, BMW Z4 and Jaguar XK.

The data support other recent stats that show Americans could actually be in a “mancession.” According to 2008 U.S. Census Bureau data analyzed by a New York research firm, single women age 22 to 30 now earn 8% more than men in metro areas. Additionally, the Council of Graduate Schools also released data recently showing women earn the majority of doctoral degrees in the U.S.

According to the data, most women luxury drivers under 30 today are living in major metropolitan cities such as Chicago; Philadelphia; Washington, D.C.; Boston; Charlotte, N.C.; Phoenix; Atlanta and San Francisco.

Sternal also pointed that more than 50% of all LeaseTrader users - not just the under 30 luxury drive demographic - in California are currently women.
