More Contaminated Beef?


Burger lovers may have yet another cause for concern this summer. Nearly 826,000 pounds of ground beef are being recalled after regulators said the meat could be linked to a salmonella outbreak.

The recall is being labeled as Class I, a category in which officials believe there is a health hazard that could cause serious, adverse health consequences or death. Class I is the most serious of three class qualifications a recall can be given.

The affected beef was produced between June 5 and June 23 and distributed to retailers in Arizona, California, Colorado and Utah, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service announced.

Consumers are advised to check with local retailers to determine whether they may have purchased any of the products subject to recall.

The link between the beef and a salmonella outbreak was discovered in an investigation by the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment. The particular strain of salmonella in this case is resistant to many commonly prescribed drugs, which can increase the risk of hospitalization or possible treatment failure in infected individuals, the USDA says.

The agency reminds consumers that ground beef should be cooked to an internal temperature of at least 160 degrees fahrenheit.  Infection can cause abdominal cramps, and fever within eight to 72 hours after consumption. Additional symptoms may be chills, headache, nausea and vomiting that can last up to seven days.
