NEW YORK (MainStreet) — Groupon often offers deals for day trips and short getaways, but now the popular daily deal site is about to take its travel promotions to the next level.
Groupon is partnering with Expedia, the largest online travel company, to create a special section of its site called Groupon Getaways that will offer big discounts on rooms from among the more than 100,000 hotels that Expedia works with, as well as deals on cruises, airfare and car rentals.
According to a press release, Getaways will function just like the rest of Groupon, promoting limited time deals that are typically 50% cheaper than normal retail rates. Consumers will be required to purchase these deals upfront and will receive a voucher in exchange that can be redeemed for a certain advertised time period.
The new service is expected to launch in the U.S. and Canada in late June before it expands to other countries, but those interested can sign up now to receive emails with travel deals when the service does begin."We're excited to tap into Expedia's vast network of world-class travel providers, delivering unmatched exposure to them while offering a wonderful service to millions of our subscribers," said Andrew Mason, Groupon’s chief executive officer, in a statement.
Of course, Groupon is certainly not the only deal site in the travel space. Other online services like Travelzoo, Jetsetter and Lastminutetravel.com offer regular hotel and airfare deals. But the new Getaways service is particularly notable for bringing together two industry giants, which may lead to a bigger selection of potential deals down the road.
