Who says that nothing of value happens on Twitter?

KFC announced Wednesday that high school students can now apply to the company’s annual scholarship program through Twitter. College-bound students can earn up to $20,000 simply by crafting the perfect tweet.

“Every year, the Kentucky Fried Chicken Foundation awards more than 75 scholarships to college hopefuls who are committed to both their education and enriching their communities,” said John Cywinski, Chief Marketing and Food Innovation Officer for KFC. “This year, through one of the hottest emerging forms of media, we want to offer students a creative way to realize their dreams of obtaining a college education.”

To apply for the scholarship students must simply include the tag “#KFCScholar” in their tweet, followed by the reason they deserve a scholarship.

Obviously, brevity is important since tweets must be 140 characters or less. Then again, that’s part of what makes this deal so enticing. Instead of having to write a lengthy essay to get a scholarship, all you have to do is type a sentence.

Needless to say, KFC stands to gain some nice publicity on Twitter from this promotion, since there will likely be hundreds if not thousands of students tweeting about how great KFC is in order to get the scholarship. But hey, a deal is a deal.

The contest runs now through Nov. 26. So, kids, if you don’t already have a Twitter account, this might be a good time to make one.
