Free Ice Cream for Do-Gooders!

Ben and Jerry’s is giving away free ice cream again, but this time you’ll have to work for it.

With the help of Target (Stock Quote: TGT), the ice cream chain is offering a free scoop of ice cream to anyone who volunteers in their local community. As part of their “Scoop it Forward” promotion, anyone who signs up to assist in a neighborhood project through the philanthropic organization VolunteerMarch will receive a coupon for a single scoop of Ben and Jerry’s ice cream, which can then be redeemed at their local Target (provided they’ve got a Ben & Jerry’s inside.) Some examples of these projects include helping to plan a local fundraiser, tutoring a child in Spanish (or other subjects) and assisting in the completion of a community art project.  You can search for ways to volunteer (and then indulge) here.

After you receive your coupon via e-mail, you can forward it to five friends. If they sign up to help the community, they’ll be able to pass coupons along to five of their friends as well. Coupons for the ice cream are available while supplies last, but, in the event that they do run out, Ben & Jerry’s will forward $1-off coupons via e-mail to additional volunteers.

"Giving back to the community has been a part of Ben & Jerry's way of doing business since we started.” Jerry Greenfield, co-founder of Ben & Jerry's, said in a press release. “We are impressed with the number of ways Target has given back to the community over the years.  Working with Target to encourage people to volunteer in their own communities is the kind of partnership that we hope generates a lot of community benefits."

Ben and Jerry’s has created two new ice cream flavors, Berry Voluntary and Brownie Chew Gooder, in honor of the promotion.
