Email Scam Puts Apple Users at Risk

NEW YORK (MainStreet) – Apple (Stock Quote: AAPL) users have long taken pride in the fact that their computers and devices typically don’t come under attack by malware, as Windows PCs and Android phones do. But a scam currently targeting Apple users could compromise their security all the same.

Intego, which creates security products for Mac computers, reports that a sophisticated phishing attack is targeting Apple users in an attempt to get them to hand over personal and financial records.

“It has come to our attention that your account Billing Information records are out of date,” reads the email. “That requires you to update your Billing Information. Failure to update your records will result in account termination.”

The email contains a link that is purportedly to an Apple site, where targeted customers are then asked to hand over personal information and credit card data. While we haven’t visited the scammers’ site, Intego reports that it looks legitimate. And just as importantly, the email certainly looks like it comes from Apple: Aside from the odd capitalization of “Billing Information,” the email is free of spelling and grammatical errors, and even bears the address for Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, Calif. That means that otherwise savvy computer users could find themselves duped into handing over their credit card numbers.

The scam apparently began spreading on Christmas, which means that people who received a new iPhone or computer may not think twice about entering their account information for their new toy. Those users would be well advised to treat any email asking for account information with suspicion, and to double-check all Web addresses to make sure they’re on a legitimate site.

Hackers don’t need to get a hold of your credit card number to do financial damage. Here’s why it’s so important to keep all of your personal data under lock and key.
