Buy Snacks, Get a Free Movie Rental

Redbox fans can get a free movie rental from kiosks at Kroger grocery stores with the purchase of certain snacks and drinks as part of a new “Make it a Movie Night” promotion.

Redbox (Stock Quote: CSTR), which offers new-release DVD rentals at kiosks in stores such as Kroger (Stock Quote: KR), Wal-Mart (Stock Quote: WMT), Walgreens (Stock Quote: WAG) and McDonald’s (Stock Quote: MCD), is teaming up with PepsiCo (Stock Quote: PEP) for the year-long promotion, offering a free one-night movie rental with the purchase of three qualifying PepsiCo products.

Kroger shoppers who want to take advantage of the deal can choose among a variety of items including two-liter bottles of Pepsi or Mountain Dew and certain full-sized bags of Tostitos, Cheetos, Ruffles or Lay’s chips. At the register, you’ll get a receipt with a special code you’ll use at the Redbox kiosk to get your free rental.

Signs will be placed in soft drink, chip, candy and popcorn aisles of certain Kroger stores advertising the deal, which is also available at other store names owned by Kroger including City Market, Dillons, Jay C, Food 4 Less, Fred Meyer and Fry’s.

“PepsiCo snacks and beverages go hand-in-hand with a movie,” said PepsiCo marketer Geoff Kuzio in a statement.

Interestingly, PepsiCo called its brands, including sodium- and sugar-laden products from Frito-Lay, Pepsi-Cola and Gatorade “nourishing” in its announcement of the promotion, but they may be nothing compared to trail mix, yogurt, and fresh fruits and vegetables which could be making their way to movie theaters across the country, as MainStreet previously reported.

Redbox kiosks have added to the already considerable competition among movie rental companies like Blockbuster (Stock Quote: BBI) and Netflix (Stock Quote: NFLX), meaning the companies continue to add on deals and incentives for consumers who rent DVDs.
