Burn Hazard: iPhone, iPod Cases Recalled

NEW YORK (MainStreet) – Back in October we took a look at the Mophie Juice Pack, a case for the iPhone 4 and 4S that extends your device’s battery life. Unfortunately, it looks like this type of case may have the unintended side effect of giving you a nasty burn.

While there doesn’t appear to be anything wrong with that particular variety of the Juice Pack, the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Wednesday that a similar case intended for use with the fourth-generation iPod Touch is being recalled due to concerns that it could overheat. About 6,000 of the Mophie Juice Pack Air cases sold since April 2011 are being recalled after the company received numerous reports of cases that overheated, causing injury to nine people who sustained minor burns. The recall only affects cases with serial numbers beginning with TR113 through TR120, which the company says contain a defective component. No other Mophie products should be affected.

Consumers who own one of the recalled cases should stop using it immediately, then go to Mophie’s site for information on how to exchange the case for a new one. Given that overheated cases may damage the iPod itself, a company spokeswoman told MainStreet that “in the case of extreme damage to the iPod touch itself, Mophie is willing to work with all of its customers on a case-by-case basis.”

That’s not the only charging case that’s burning people, though. The CPSC concurrently announced a recall of the Rocketfish battery case for the iPhone 3G and 3GS. And this one’s much bigger: The recall affects 31,000 cases in the U.S., plus another 1,000 in Canada. As with the Mophie case, the products are being recalled due to overheating, with three reports of burns and four reports of property damage.

If you own a Rocketfish case with the model number RF-KL12, you’re entitled to a $70 gift card to Best Buy, which originally sold the cases (Canadian customers get a $110 gift card). For information on cashing in, call Best Buy at 1-800-917-5737.
