Bill Clinton Raffles Himself Off for Hillary

Bill Clinton is back on the market. The former president is offering up a day with himself to help pay off the remainder of Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign debt.

“How would you like the chance to come up to New York and spend the day with me?” Mr. Clinton said in an e-mail to Mrs. Clinton’s campaign supporters. “Hillary’s campaign still has a few vestiges of debt that I know she would like to see paid in full. Will you reach out today to help Hillary this one last time?”

According to her March Federal Election Commission filing, Mrs. Clinton still owes $771,000 to firm Penn, Schoen and Berland for consulting, polling and mailing expenses. As Secretary of State, she is prohibited from raising funds herself, so it is a good thing her husband is available.

Those who contribute $5 or more to Mrs. Clinton’s defunct campaign up until May 18 become eligible for the opportunity to spend one day with the 42nd president.

Notably, this is the second time Mr. Clinton has raffled off his services to help his wife. In April 2009, a day with Bill also came with a weekend in New York City, and he wasn’t the only item on the docket. Friends of Hillary also auctioned off tickets to the American Idol finale and lunch in Washington with cable pundits James Carville and Paul Begala.

“We talked about how Hillary’s doing as Secretary of State and the current state of the world, and about the work of my foundation,” Mr. Clinton said of his visit with the April 2009 winner. “I had such a good time that I’d like to do it again.”

When her campaign ended in 2008, it was estimated that Mrs. Clinton had, in total, $9.5 million in unpaid bills as a result of her failed bid for the presidency ($5 million of this was owed to Penn, Schoen and Berland.) Additionally, she herself had lent $11.4 million to her campaign.  Not that the Clintons are in financial ruin.  According to a Times Online article, the pair have earned a combined $109 million since 2007.

Hope that means lunch is on Bill.
