Amazon Launches Daily Kindle Deals

NEW YORK (MainStreet) – Amazon began offering daily deals on Kindle e-books today, starting things off with a children’s book for 75% off.

The deals will go live every night at approximately midnight Pacific time and will run for 24 hours. The first book on the docket is The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane, a children’s novel from Newberry Award-winning author Kate DiCamillo. The list price is $6.99, and on Tuesday it was for sale on Amazon for $5.59; today only though, it can be had for $1.39.

It’s surprising that it took so long for Amazon to introduce daily deals to its Kindle e-book store. The company has long offered “Gold Box” deals, which include both a daily deal and a series of lightning deals that are only around for a few hours or while supplies last. And when the retailer launched its Android app store back in March, it did so with a daily deal component – in this case, a paid app for free every day. Clearly, this is a business model Amazon is getting behind in a big way.

So will the daily e-book deals be any good? We’re cautiously optimistic. The Gold Box deals are typically of a high caliber – today, for instance, the site is offering the entire 60-episode run of The Wire for just $73 – so we’d imagine the Kindle deals will be similarly well-chosen. And while we’ll confess to not having heard of the first book offered through the service, it’s very well-reviewed by Amazon users and obviously comes at a deep discount. If you have a Kindle and like saving money, this might be worth bookmarking.
