12 Days of Deals from Starbucks, Whataburger

NEW YORK (MainStreet) - Now that December is here, both Starbucks and the fast food chain Whataburger have the same idea: Offer 12 deals to celebrate the 12 days of Christmas. Take heed, though – both require you to hand over contact info to get the deals, and neither is telling exactly what kind of deals you’ll get.

First up is Whataburger, the fast food chain that (sadly) only operates in the South. For its “12 Days of Whataburger,” you have to enter your e-mail on the website, and in return you’ll get a coupon in your inbox every other day through Dec. 22. The coupons are for dine-in only, and the site warns that “By signing up, you agree to receive these and future promotional emails from Whataburger.” Sure, you can probably unsubscribe from the e-mails, but you will still be giving out your contact information. You’ll just have to decide how badly you want that cheap hamburger.

Meanwhile, Starbucks is promoting deals, some with charity tie-ins, for the next 12 days. In this case, the deals arrive via text message. To sign up, just text 12DAYS to 29943. Text messaging rates apply, meaning (depending on your plan) that you may end up paying a small fee to give your phone number to Starbucks.

Of course, with few details on upcoming deals, you won’t really know if the service will even be worth it. The first ‘deal’ is apparently just a text message alerting you that 5 cents from every beverage you buy (at regular price) at Starbucks will go to fight AIDS in Africa. Since most text message plans charge around 20 cents per text message anyway, it probably makes more sense to cut out the middleman and drop a nickel in your local Salvation Army bucket.
