Even with Emile Hirsch behind the wheel, Speed Racer crashed at the box office its opening weekend, earning a relatively paltry $22.2 million and the title of 2008's first summer mega-bomb. It was a major disaster, after Warner Brothers (TWX) sunk a reported $120 million into the film’s production (not to mention additional marketing and promotion costs). But the film's flopping not only impacts the studio: McDonalds (MCD), Target (TGT), General Mills (GIS) and Puma all have licensing deals with the film and are most likely feeling the burn as well.

At least Warner Brothers can bounce back from its slow start when the ladies of Sex and the City and Get Smart, starring Steve Carrell and Anne Hathaway, hit the big screen on May 30 and June 20, respectively.
