The Best Winter Cruise Deals of 2011

Bon Voyage

By now, you’ve probably settled in hibernation mode, only setting foot outdoors to go back and forth to your office for work, and occasionally rummaging for food at the nearest sandwich shop. But if you’re looking to escape the cold for a few precious days and enjoy a getaway, now is a great time to book a cruise. It’s the off season, which means that many cruises are cheaper than usual.

We’ve rounded up seven great cruises that set sail this winter to help you escape your malaise. Best of all, they cost less than $100 a night, so you can pamper yourself a bit and see some beautiful parts of the world without worrying too much about the damage it will do to your bank account.

Note: Each of these cruises, as priced here, were available at press time, but they may sell out in the coming days, so get them while you can!

Mexican Riviera

What better way to escape the cold weather than to make your way down to the warm, picturesque beaches of the Mexican Riviera? Princess Cruises is currently offering seven-night round-trip cruise between Los Angeles and Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, with stops at Puerto Vallarta and Mazatlan starting at just $549 per person for a room that fits two. That works out to just $78 a night for a week in paradise. There are two of these cruises coming up next month, leaving on Feb. 12 and Feb. 19, but we would recommend signing up for the first one and turning it into an extravagant Valentine’s Day getaway.

Caribbean Cruise

Most cruises leaving from the U.S. generally depart from Fort Lauderdale or Los Angeles, but if you happen to live in the middle of the country and don’t want to travel too far, you can take this Royal Caribbean cruise from Galveston, Texas. Over the course of seven nights, you’ll sail to Cozumel, Mexico, Grand Cayman in the aptly named Cayman Islands and Montego Bay, Jamaica and then return back to good ol’ Texas. The cruise departs Jan. 30 and rooms for two start at just $449 per person, or about $64 a night.

The Panama Canal

No cruise list would be complete without the Panama Canal trip, a staple for anyone interested in a long sail. This particular cruise from the Holland America Line is one of the better deals we’ve seen, as you get 10 nights at sea for as little as $899 per person, or about $90 a night. The round-trip cruise departs from Fort Lauderdale and makes stops in Aruba and Costa Rica on the way to and from the Panama Canal.  The cruise leaves Feb. 1.

Mediterranean Cruise

If you’re looking for a new twist on a European vacation, MSC Cruises has a round-trip eight-night cruise that sails along much of Europe’s southern coast, starting in Barcelona, Spain, moving on to Genoa, Italy, and then back through port towns in Spain and Portugal. The ultimate Mediterranean voyage leaves on March 30 and starts at $529 per person or about $66 a night.

The African Adventure

Paul Theroux made news years ago when he managed to make his way from Cairo at the northern edge of Africa all the way down to Cape Town, South Africa, for his book Dark Star Safari. But now you can go along the entire coast of Africa in complete comfort on MSC Cruises’ 17-night extended cruise that starts in Barcelona and makes stops in Namibia, Senegal and Jamestown, South Africa, before returning to Barcelona. For more than two weeks of sailing and adventure, you only have to pay $799 per person, or about $47 per night. The cruise runs March 7-24.

Transatlantic Sailing

Think of it as traveling the way people used to before airplanes. This trip from MSC Cruises takes you on a 16-night voyage from Fort Lauderdale, Fla., across the Atlantic to Barcelona, stopping off in Puerto Rico, Antigua, St. Lucia and Portugal along the way. The cruise starts at $1,039 per person, or about $65 a night. And look at it this way: at $1,000 a person, it’s not that much more expensive than flying to Europe, and instead of dealing with airport pat-downs and baggage fees, you get to eat and dance your way across the ocean.
