Many of the new blazes are in Northern California and are threatening office buildings and homes. This year, wildfires have destroyed more than 175 homes in Northern California after they began burning in mid-May, following the state's driest two-month period on record.
One of the most important lessons coming out of the fires that have engulfed the west coast, is for people to always be prepared for a natural disaster. While personal safety is the most chief concern, rebuilding your life after a natural disaster, such as a fire that is started by lightening, can be daunting unless you plan in advance.
Perhaps the easiest way to protect your belongs is to get the right insurance. As MainStreet has previously reported, natural disaster damages may be covered in a homeowners insurance policy, but not necessarily. Check your policy and see if you need additional coverage: Allstate (ALL), for example, offers a special service for catastrophe claims.
At the same time, investing in a fireproof box, many models can be found at Home Depot (HD) or Target (TGT), is a way to keep some of your vital personal documents safe.
In the meantime, those who want to help victims of the latest California wild fires can give to the Red Cross or the Salvation Army.
