Lounging on the couch downloading Vampire Weekend from Amazon.com (AMZN) and adding friends from various social networking Web sites like Bebo (TWX) and MySpace (NWS) is not the only way for your children to spend the summer. While the weather makes it a good time for vacations or staycations, it’s also a terrific time for college, or even high school, students to earn extra money for winter getaways. And, if you think time has run out to snag a job, think again. There are many enterprising opportunities out there for teens looking to earn spare dough -- the key is searching for the right job. Sure, creating a Web site and making millions might be the ideal job for young teens over the summer, but for kids who might not be the next Mark Zuckerberg there are other ways to make money.
Here are a few suggestions from MainStreet on summer jobs still available right now:
BABYSITTER
There’s no need to be an A student to take on this job. But, a love for kids is a must. While it requires a lot of responsibility, there is also great flexibility in babysitting. Whether evenings or weekends are your thing, your schedule is based on availability.
TUTOR
Whether you’re knowledgeable in French or geometry, there is always the opportunity to help a young student over the summer. You may find job listings on Craigslist [www.craisglist.org] or in the local newspaper as young students cram to learn before the next school year. But, word of mouth is also effective, and you may hear of a job assisting a younger childhood friend.
CAMP COUNSELOR
There are away camps and day camps that are frequently looking for college students to help lead tweens and teens. The positions are often broken up into subcategories, such as activity counselor or group counselor, so job responsibilities may vary. Whether you’re working in arts and crafts, sports, or leading the team, this job could be exciting for college students’ home from break looking for a job that is based on interaction.
PROMOTIONS
Many corporations work with agencies to promote the launch of particular products. A job in promotions allows you to leave behind set hours and base your schedule on your availability. This could be the perfect thing for college students not looking to commit to 9 to 5. Promotional opportunities are assigned from companies like Big Orange Productions or Eventpro Strategies. The gigs vary, which means you could distribute soda one day, and the next day could be spent at a wine store pouring samples.
RETAIL
If all else fails, there’s always retail, which can go from a summer job into a winter opportunity. Many major retailers hire employees part-time for the summer to help with sales and customer service. While some companies may only pay minimum wage and could have stringent hours, jobs at a major retail company could provide opportunities if you’re looking to transfer to another store after the summer break.
