So, by following these earth friendly tips, you can help save the planet and as a bonus save your cash, too!
Lower the Thermostat
According to the U.S. Department of Energy, most households spend 50- 70% of their energy budgets on heating and cooling. But, by shifting the temperature controls a few degrees in the winter and the summer, rates can be reduced. According to Brian Clark Green, author of Green Living: The E Magazine Handbook for Living Lightly in the Earth, in warm weather, setting the thermostat at 78 degrees or higher can reduce cooling costs by 10% to 20%. And, in colder weather, every degree that the thermostat is lowered will save between 1% and 3% off a heating bill. Another way to save at the thermostat is by installing a programmable one. These devices will save approximately $150 a year, according to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
Turn Down the Water Heater
Reducing the temperature on a water heater from 140 to 120 degrees can reduce hot water costs by 6% to 10%. Heating costs can also be saved by only washing clothes in cold water and then letting them air dry.
