According to the Centers for Disease Control, over 90 million Americans live with chronic illnesses like diabetes and arthritis , and an estimated 10.5 million are living with a previous diagnosis of cancer.

Preparing for a crisis is integral to sound financial planning. Simple steps like making a will or settling your health insurance will ensure that your money lives on after you are gone.
Facing a Long-Term Illness

Be sure to get life insurance to provide your spouse, partner or children with some financial security in the event of your death. If you have dependents that rely on your income, you should have life insurance whether or not you have a long-term or terminal illness.

You should also consider getting long-term care insurance if you anticipate that your illness might eventually prevent you from working or caring for yourself. Long-term care insurance covers nursing home care and many policies also cover in-home care. Depending on the nature of your illness, a disability insurance policy might cover lost income due to a long absence from work.

Be sure to get the right insurance assistance to help you sort out what type and how much insurance coverage you need. If you don’t have health insurance, an insurance agent can help you get health insurance, too. And, setting up a financial record-keeping system will minimize worry and allow you to focus on your health.

Finally, now is the time to make your will so you can decide how your assets will be distributed in the event your illness takes a turn for the worst. It’s not an easy task to consider, but knowing your estate is in order will also bring you peace of mind so you can focus on your immediate needs.
