Isaac Newton may have discovered gravity by watching an apple fall from a tree, but on a day when the market plunged, these apples were going nowhere but up. And considering the frenzy of media attention dedicated to the unveiling of the new Apple (AAPL) 3G iPhone (ourselves included), you might’ve missed the fact the fates of mortgage giants Fannie Mae (FNM) and Freddie Mac (FRE) are hanging in the balance. Apple’s flagship store in Manhattan was inundated with media outlets from across the globe Friday morning, all jockeying for a piece of the apple pie.
