Five days away from the Apple (AAPL) 3G iPhone release, MainStreet headed out on the streets to find out how many enthusiastic customers were waiting in line at the flagship store.
At the Apple store on 5th Avenue in New York City, MainStreet stumbled upon a group of men and women lounging in lawn chairs, and surrounded by a CNBC (GE)crew. Were they eagerly awaiting the new 3g iPhone? MainStreet wanted to know.
After hearing lines repeated more than once and seeing what appeared to be legitimate fans clutching what we believed to be scripts, we here at MainStreet grew increasingly confused. Was this a commercial being shot outside of the Apple store? We wanted to find out. MainStreet attempted to get an interview, but was informed that we must talk to a representative for the group. We were shocked. How could there be a group representative for consumers anticipating a cell phone? Hmm.
Would this spokesperson for the group really offer original thought on the new 3G iPhone – if he didn’t have a script? Alas, we wouldn’t have the chance to find out. And, more importantly, what was happening at the Apple store? Could this be the making of another iPhone sing-a-long by tech columnist David Pogue, or just poseurs?
We’re not exactly sure what was taking place but we’ll leave it up to you to decide. Your thoughts?
