NEW YORK (MainStreet) — If you’re having trouble budgeting money for charity this holiday season, you may want to check out GoodShop.com. The online shopping and coupon portal partners with retailers so that up to 30% of a consumer’s purchase is donated to charity.
Users simply select a participating nonprofit of their choice prior to picking out the products they want to purchase. Once you select an organization, you can to see what percentage of your purchase each respective retailer is willing to donate to it, and how much a particular charity has received through the website already. For instance, the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, the top-earning charity on GoodShop, has received $43,317 since the site launched in 2007.
The portal takes consumers directly to the store’s website. It also posts coupons that can be used at select retailers as they become available, so users don’t have to be overly concerned about missing out on great deals elsewhere.
Other nonprofits eligible for donations include St. Jude’s Children Hospital, the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, UNICEF and the American Red Cross. Consumers can shop at more than 2,500 retailers through the site, including Target, Apple, Macy’s, Best Buy, Barnes & Noble, Gap and PetSmart.
The site is a part of GoodSearch.com, a search engine powered by Yahoo that donates approximately 1 cent to a user’s favorite charity whenever they search for something online. The third site in the network, GoodDining.com, lets users earn up to 6% for their favorite causes when they patronize one of the site’s 10,000 partner restaurants.
Together, GoodSearch.com, GoodShop.com and GoodDining.com have raised more than $8 million for charity to date, GoodSearch, says co-founder J.J. Ramberg.
