The American Girl Dolls (MAT) are going Hollywood.
The movie Kit Kittredge: An American Girl (TWC) (MAT) hits theaters nationwide this week and is the first feature film based on the popular doll and book series. In this adventure young Kit, an American girl living during the Great Depression, uses her budding reporting skills to solve a mystery.
However, the real mystery surrounding this movie might be how parents can afford to keep their children's dolls as decked out as the live American Girls they see on the big screen. That is because American Girl Doll owners everywhere can outfit their dolls the same clothes, accessories and furniture that Kit has in the film, at a price.
The Kit Movie Shop at the American Girl's website is where fans can purchase Kit’s nightgown, birthday dress, and overalls as well as her bed set, desk, homemade scooter and tree house. But, with doll prices starting at $90, clothes averaging $30 for an outfit and accessories like Kit’s bedroom collection selling for $135, outfitting a doll can become an expensive habit. Buy all of Kit's outfits and accessories, and it will cost you $1,122! (And, that doesn't include the versions of identical items designed for your children's use: A replica of Kit's nightgown that your girl can sleep costs $54. And so on.) There are, however, some ways to get around the high prices and still enjoy your American Girl Doll.
