Recalls: Washing Machine Fire Hazard, Dangerous Paint Scrapers

Consumers are being warned to stop using certain washing machines after a drain pump defect in about 35,000 machines could cause heat buildup and pose a fire hazard.

The top-load and front-load clothes washers, with the brand names Crosley, Frigidaire, Kelvinator, Kenmore, Wascomat and White-Westinghouse were distributed by Frigidaire and sold at Sears (Stock Quote: SHLD) and other retailers nationwide from February 2009 through May 2009 for between $300 and $1100, according to the Consumer Products Safety Commission.

No injuries have been reported.  To find the washing machine model numbers affected by the recall, visit CPSC.gov.

Consumers are urged to stop using the machines, unplug them and contact Frigidaire or Sears to schedule a free repair.

Frigidaire can be reached at (800) 734-4519 or www.laundrypumprecall.com and Sears can be reached at (888) 549-5870 or www.sears.com for additional information.

Separately, about 76,000 Purdy edge scrapers distributed by Sherwin-Williams have been recalled because the body of the scraper can detach from the handle when struck against a hard object posing a laceration hazard. There have been no reported injuries.

The paint scraper is a two-and-a-half-inch wide steel tool with a four-sided edge. The handle has a soft black grip with “Purdy” printed in red letters on the side of the handle, according to the CPSC.

The recalled scrapers were sold at Sherwin-Williams Paint stores, Duron Paint stores, MA Bruder Paint stores, United Paint Stores, Norfolk Paint Stores, Mercury Paint Stores, Old Quaker Paint Stores, Flex Bon Paint Stores and Columbia Paint Stores nationwide from February 2009 through June 2009 for about $9.

The scrapers should be returned to any Sherwin-Williams store or the place of purchase for a free replacement.  For more information, Sherwin-Williams can be reached at (888) 304-3769 or www.sherwin-williams.com.
