Your State Tax Extension Rules, From Alabama Through Florida

By Elizabeth Rosen

NEW YORK (IRS.com) — Do you need to file a state income tax extension? While it’s fairly simple and streamlined to file a federal tax extension, state extensions vary depending on where you live. Because of this, we’ve compiled a list of where to go for each state if you need a little bit more time on your taxes.

Alabama

Alabama residents are granted an automatic six-month extension if they cannot file on time. They must send in payments if they owe them with Alabama Tax Form 40V, though.

Alaska

Alaska has no state income tax, so there is no need to file for an extension.

Arizona

If you were approved for a federal tax extension, Arizona will grant you an automatic six-month state tax extension. If you did not file a federal tax extension or you owe state income tax, you must submit Arizona Tax Form 204.

If you are sending a tax payment with your extension request, mail Form 204 to:
Arizona Department of Revenue, PO Box 29085, Phoenix, AZ  85038-9085

If you are not sending a payment with your tax extension request, mail Form 204 to:
Arizona Department of Revenue, PO Box 52138, Phoenix, AZ  85072-2138

Arkansas

If you were approved for a federal income tax extension, Arizona grants you a six-month state income tax extension automatically. If you need to make a payment for state taxes owed, though, you will need to submit that with Arkansas Tax Form AR1000ES by the original filing deadline.
