Tyson's Big Money Smacker
Friend-of-MainStreet Tyson Beckford (ok so maybe he’s not a friend friend but we’re easy—we love anyone who is nice to us), proved last night that he’s willing to give up for charity.
The former Polo model (RL) made a sexy contribution at a March 6 fundraising event for Working Playground, a non-profit cultural organization that provides arts education in underserved New York City public schools.
The event took place at Los Dados, in Manhattan's meatpacking district restaurant, where artistic board chair Rosie Perez conducted an after dinner Q&A with some of the stars from the hit HBO (TWX) show The Wire. The actors, Michael Kenneth Williams (Omar), Andre Royo (Bubbles), Ramon Rodriguez (Renaldo), and Jamie Hector (Marlo), talked about their experiences growing up in the public school system, how disadvantaged communities in Baltimore compare to those in New York, about shooting a gay nude scene, and what’s next for them. Unfortunately, as an HBO rep on hand confirmed—as per The Wire creator David Simon—there are no plans for a The Wire movie, prequel or sequel.
But one fan got to live out a fantasy of cinematic proportions. Tyson Beckford was actually a surprise guest, coming by to lend his support to his friends Perez and the four Wire actors. Upon seeing the studly star of Bravo's Make Me a Supermodel enter, board co-chair Susan Ellis bet the ladies at her table that she would give $1,000 to anyone who went up to Beckford and kissed him. Before she could finish her sentence, Working Playground co-founder Marcy Drogin, who for years headed up production at Michael Douglas’ company Further Films, was out of her chair. After a brief introduction, the two were down to negotiating. Cheek? Offered Beckford. Nope, lips. A 30% cut of her winnings, offered Drogin. Nope, 50%, countered Beckford. Finally, the full on lip lock took place with both parties agreeing to give the whole $1000 to the charity. In both their names.
