The Final Night At Yankee Stadium

Last night marked the final game to be played at Yankee Stadium, and the home team did a good job of saying goodbye to The House That Ruth Built.

Through the years, fans have seen their favorite players come and go. Some are traded to other teams while others retire. However, nothing could compare to last night’s monumental event. The energy was akin to a World Series Game 7. As the Yankees said goodbye to the stadium that, through renovations, has been standing since 1923, it was a heartfelt moment for all. Yankee Stadium was packed with a record 54,610 fans, some of whom paid as much as $3,500, to see the game.

Fans arrived at the stadium as early as 1 p.m. to walk around the stadium, where so many Yankee legends played. They stood in awe as players were announced and remembered for their Yankee legacy.

In honor of this historic event, MainStreet came up with their top 10 moments from last night.

10 Yogi Berra wearing his #8 jersey standing behind home plate.

9 Jose Molina hitting the final homerun in Yankee Stadium to give the Yankees a 5-3 lead.

8 Andy Pettite throwing his 2,000 strikeout and receiving the last win at Yankee Stadium. He left the game in the 6th to a standing ovation by the fans and a curtain call (which we all know is rare for a pitcher to receive).

7 Mr. October, Reggie Jackson, returning to Yankee Stadium. Reggie is the only major league player in history to hit 3 homeruns during a World Series game.

6 The Yankees closer, Mariano Rivera, throwing the last pitch in the Yankees 7-3 win over Baltimore.

5 Bob Sheppard announcing the New York Yankees lineup from home.

4 Julie Ruth Stevens, Babe Ruth’s daughter, throwing out the final first pitch to commemorate the Babe’s memory in the house that he built.

3 Yankees captain, Derek Jeter, delivering a speech after the game thanking the fans for all their support. He said, “And we are relying on you to take the memories from this stadium, add them to the memories to come at the new Yankee Stadium, and continue to pass them on from generation to generation.”

2 Bernie Williams finally returning to Yankee Stadium. (He had not returned to Yankee stadium since his final game in 2006.)

1 The entire Yankee team tipping their hats to the fans and taking the final walk around the warning track.

Let us know what your favorite memory was from last night’s historic game.
