Massive Ground Turkey Recall Just Got Bigger
As previously reported, most people infected with salmonella generally develop diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after exposure. Infections can be life-threatening, especially to those with weak immune systems, such as infants, the elderly and persons with an HIV infection or those currently undergoing chemotherapy.
However, the strain involved in the Cargill recall carries an increased risk of hospitalization or possible treatment failure since Salmonella Heidelberg is resistant to many common antibiotics.
According to data released by the Center for Disease Control and Prevention just last week, salmonella was the second most common food-borne agent in 2008 (the last measured year), accounting for 23% of outbreaks and 31% of illnesses.
