The Cost of Love (Online)

In today’s technologically advanced world, people use their computers for almost everything - and that includes dating. Online dating sites provide members with a number of advantages that aren’t in the “real” world.  Users can access hundreds of profiles of potential mates with the click of a mouse, and they don’t even have to leave the couch.

But are these perks really worth the costs involved?

MainStreet breaks down the Web’s most popular dating sites, and what they charge for the chance of finding love.

eHarmony.com: There are a variety of membership options for users to choose from at eHarmony. According to the site, a one-month subscription costs $59.95, but the price is lowered as the length of the membership increases.  With a three-month membership the cost drops to $39.95 per month or $119.85 in full. A six-month membership is $29.95 per month or $179.70 in full and a yearly membership is $19.95 per month, or $239.40 in full.

OkCupid.com: Membership is completely free.  According to a release from the company, “OkCupid.com is putting an arrow through the hearts of millions without leaving a hole in their wallet.”

JDate.com: According to Gail Laguna, a spokesperson for Spark Network which operates JDate.com, the membership cost is $39.99 a month but lowers if users sign up for multi-month memberships.  For instance, when members purchase a three-month package the monthly fee becomes $33.33 and with a six-month package it’s $24.99 a month.

PlentyofFish.com:
Membership is completely free.  According to the site, “[A membership fee] is not necessary. We’re supported by advertising revenue.”
