Facebook, YouTube and Twitter Jobs Falter While Android Stomps Apple

NEW YORK (MainStreet) — Android's cheaper operating system is poised to take over the cell phone market globally, giving Apple a run for its money in more ways than one, according to new data.

"Sales of Android phones have skyrocketed not only in developing countries but also around the world and as handset adoption continues to climb in Android's favor, more businesses focus their mobile efforts towards their operating system," said Nikki Parker, regional director with Freelancer.com North America.

Freelancer.com data reveals that employment at iPhone is down 10.5% to 9,136 and iPad jobs are down 18.4% from 3,133 to 2,556 jobs while employment at Android has been steady at 11,083 jobs. "Android is doing much better than iOS because of its open architecture and the lack of new advancements from Apple," said Victor Janulaitis, CEO with Janco Associates. "Steve Jobs is sorely missed as Apple does not have an individual or group of individuals who have the same kind of vision as he did."

Many tech sector jobs in Silicon Valley were mostly created by innovators like Google, but recent layoffs by Hewlett Packard (HP) and Microsoft have created a drag on the employment market.

"HP and Microsoft are both legacy corporations that are going through the same stagnation that IBM did when the PC came out," Janulaitis told MainStreet. "Whether they can thrive again will depend on if they can adapt."

Since June, more than 48,000 jobs have been cut from the tech sector not including 18,000 at Microsoft. Some 16,000 cuts are anticipated at HP.

"In the case of HP and Microsoft, long term growth will be based on what competitive advantage they can present," Janulaitis said. "In the near term, there will continue to be additional adverse impacts in the surrounding metro areas where there is a high reliance on jobs from both of those companies."

Social media platforms, such as Twitter, Facebook and YouTube, also experienced a downturn in employment numbers.

Facebook marketing jobs dropped by 9% to 7,090 on the heels of the company's algorithm updates.

"The drop in social networking jobs shows that businesses are unsure about whether they are achieving ROI for their businesses," Parker told MainStreet. "Facebook has undergone a dramatic algorithm update which has effectively lowered the organic reach of Facebook pages. Many marketers are turning their backs on the social networking giant as they are fed up with being forced into paid advertising as their own networks that they have cultivated and grown are losing value."

The reach of pages has reportedly dropped from 16% to as low as 1% to 2%.

"This leads us to believe that marketers are pulling back from spending a significant commitment in building communities that they don't actually own," Parker said.

Expected areas of job growth include enterprise architecture designers, HTML developers, project managers and programmer analysts.

"Data driven web application skills are in demand as well as WiFi security expansion skills for the move to more mobile computing," said Janulaitis.
